Youngsters who’ve won elections to be ‘youth mayors’ of Tower Hamlets over the past 10 years were invited to a Prince’s Trust reception in Whitechapel to meet up again with the council’s chief executive.
The young mayors and their youth cabinets are voted for by pupils and teenagers to represent them and give them a say in town hall decisions on social, economic, environment, health, community and communications issues.
“We want to put their voice at the heart of decision making,” chief executive Will Tuckley explained. “It connects them to the council’s work and to the democratic process.”
Next elections for young mayor and his cabinet are in March at schools and youth and community centres, with the yearly term of office starting in April.
The council is inviting wannabe young mayors or youth cabinet members to go online to find out how to get on the ballot paper.
Some over the past decade have gone on to the professions including a junior doctor, auditor, housing project manager, data analyst and employment lawyer.
