Volunteers are being recruited to help spend £200,000 of Town Hall cash on neighbourhood pet projects in London’s East End.

Tower Hamlets Council is looking for coordinators to run local forums to come up with ideas for projects to improve their areas.

“Nobody knows their community better than the people who live there,” said Mayor Lutfur Rahman. “So it makes sense to ask them how to improve their surroundings.”

Each of the 20 wards are being allocated £10,000 for projects, three more wards than last year before the boundary changes.

Ideas last year included a drug-awareness event in Stepney, an inter-generational event in Limehouse and a business hub in Wapping offering skills training.

Forums also paid for Bow’s Roman Road Festival, staged Le Tour de Limehouse festival and created the Weavers Green trail in Bethnal Green taking walkers on a tour of the area.

The new coordinators are being appointed this autumn and given training to run the public meetings that will to decide how to spend their allocated money next spring.

Deadline for applications to the Town Hall to be a Community Champion Coordinator is midnight on September 14 and can be made online.
