Tower Hamlets’ two MPs must decide within days whether to vote for or against Theresa May’s Brexit deal.

Bethnal Green and Bow’s member of parliament, Rushanara Ali, has vowed to vote against it slating the withdrawal agreement as “a blindfold Brexit”.

Poplar and Limehouse MP Jim Fitzpatrick was yet to confirm how he would vote at the time the Advertiser went to press.

MPs will have their say on the withdrawal agreement struck between the government and European Union on Tuesday.

Over 599 pages it outlines arrangements for the UK’s exit from the EU including plans for workers rights, trade and borders.

Ms Ali said: “This is a terrible deal for all areas of the UK, and represents a huge failure for this government.

“This deal will make our country worse off.

“I refuse to accept the prime minister’s false choice between her bad deal and no deal. I will vote against it, and campaign for a people’s vote.”

She added the deal only provided for a temporary customs union, was unclear on a future trading relationship, and offered little protection for workers’ rights and environmental standards.

“This is a blindfold Brexit. The government has failed to deliver for working people,” she said.

However, Mr Fitzpatrick said he did not support a second referendum but suggested any outcome was still possible given the mess the government has made for itself and the country.

“I am still examining the deal and watching developments, and will decide on how I should vote in due course,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

He repeated Labour’s official position: to vote down the withdrawal agreement, seek a general election and renegotiate a better deal.

A government spokesman said: “This is the right deal for the UK, including east London. It protects jobs and livelihoods, and takes back control of our borders, laws and money. We’ll be able, for the first time in 40 years, to strike new trade deals, opening up new markets around the world.

“Passing this deal through parliament will allow us to focus on building our bright, post-Brexit future.”
