THE road logistics centres that organise deliveries to the 2012 Olympic construction site in East London became fully-operational this week.

Olympic Authority chairman John Armitt visited the centres at Barking and on the M11 today (Wednesday) with his director of construction Howard Shiplee to see them at full stretch.

The Barking centre takes vehicles from the South and East of Britain and has processed 15,000 vehicles so far. The M11 centre takes vehicles from the North and West and has processed 5,000.

Deliveries to the Olympic Park at Stratford go to the logistics centres first to be screened, to be recorded onto a tracking module before being called for their allotted time for arrival at Stratford, which avoids lorry congestion through the streets of East London.

Around four vehicles a minute enter the Olympic Park. Getting the logistics right is vital to manage the flow of vehicles in and around Stratford.

But half the materials are also being brought into the site by rail to the Bow East logistics centre, which can take six freight trains a day, and by barge along the River Lea where a wharf has been constructed near the Aquatics centre.
