The London Assembly member for City and East has welcomed news that the London Living Wage is set to rise.
Unmesh Desai said the increase, from £10.20 to £10.55 per hour, would be a “significant boost” to Tower Hamlets.
The rise is set to benefit 55,000 Londoners.
He said: “This significant boost to the London Living Wage will be a fantastic help to those in Tower Hamlets struggling to get by.
“In London we feel the rising cost of living more acutely than anywhere else, particularly due to the extremely high cost of housing.
“We now need more local employers to sign up to the London Living Wage.”
Living wage rates are independently calculated, based on what people need to live on. The 2018 increase has been driven by higher transport costs, private rent and council tax feeding through to services which underpin the rates.
The UK-wide rate is also rising, from £8.75 to £9 per hour.
