WORST place in the South East for having your car nicked or your sat nav’ swiped has been revealed as London, according to insurance figures out today.

London is also named as the sixth riskiest place in Britain for motor thefts, nearly 60 per cent above the national average.

Next worst place in the Home Counties is Reading, 41 per cent above average, ironically just a 40-minute drive along the M4 from Swindon, Britain's safest place.

London is worse than Northampton, Sheffield and Oldham, but not as bad as Hull, Nottingham, Bradford and Britain’s car theft capital’ Manchester, according to Endsleigh’s annual Motor Theft Index.

The figures are based on claims for stolen cars and possessions such as ipods and satellite navigation over the last three years. The Index ranks areas by frequency of claims, rather than just looking at the number of incidents.

One bright spark of hope for London's worried motorists is that latest figures from the Met Police last week suggest car theft is at its lowest for 10 years.
