Professional chef Matt Campbell, 29, collaped at the 22.5 mile mark - along The Highway on the way back towards Tower Bridge - during Sunday’s race.

He received immediate medical treatment at the scene but died later in hospital.

In addition to the donations to his chosen charity, Brathay Trust, hundreds of runners have also pledged to run the 3.7 miles that Matt, from the Lake District, was unable to complete.

A Facebook group, Finish for Matt, urges runners to complete the distance on Saturday and make a donation to Matt’s Justgiving page. More than 1,300 people have indicated that they will take part.

Matt Dorber, who set up the group, wrote: “A small gesture of solidarity would be to ‘finish’ the run for Matt.

“It may be in London, Somerset, Manchester - where ever you are - but if as many people can do a 3.7m run on [run tracking app] Strava on Saturday, and give a £5 ‘entry fee’ to Matt’s justgiving page, I think that’d be a nice gesture from us as a group.”

East End Road Runners have arranged a 3.7 mile run as part of this, starting at Newham Leisure Centre, Plaistow, at 9am on Sunday. Members and non-members alike are invited to attend.

Tributes have been paid to the Masterchef: The Professionals semi-finalist, who was running in memory of his late father Martin, who died in 2016.

A spokesman for the show said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear the news about Matt Campbell, one of our talented contestants from last year.

“It was a privilege to have him on the show. He will always be remembered for producing for some of the most innovative and groundbreaking food that we saw on the series.

A spokesman for the Brathay Trust added: “He was a real creative chef and one of the things he was very keen on doing was sharing that knowledge with young chefs who wanted to get involved in the industry.

“He was such a great athlete and also a wonderful supporter of Brathay.”
