More than 36,000 runners – including Olympic hero Mo Farah – will run through the East End on Sunday for the 33rd London Marathon.

The 2012 Olympic gold medallist in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races will return to east London to test his mettle against some of the world’s finest long distance runners.

After starting in Greenwich, runners will pass over the famous Tower Bridge before making their way along The Highway, through Shadwell and Limehouse.

They will then complete a lap around the Isle of Dogs, through Canary Wharf, and back towards central London before finishing their gruelling journey in The Mall, Westminster.

Runners, spectators, motorists and passengers are being advised to plan their journeys ahead of the race, with a series of road closures set to impact residents of Tower Hamlets.

There will be road closures along the route and approach roads from 8am, along the route from Canary Wharf to Parliament Square including The Highway, Westferry Road, Commercial Road in Limehouse and Tower Bridge.

Roads will begin reopening from around 11am, with all routes expected to be running again by 7pm.

A number of bus routes will also be affected, but there will be good services on the Docklands Light Railway and the London Underground.

On race day there will be free travel on the Tube, bus, London Overground, tram and DLR for all runners, race officials and on-duty St John Ambulance volunteers from early morning until 5pm.
