THE chief London probation officer has visited the East End where he met offenders carrying out their street community service punishment orders.
Chief Officer Paul Wilson met the offenders carrying out litter picking in Bethnal Green’s Roman Road market square yesterday (August 18).
The community payback’ scheme is a punishment handed out by the courts to an offender to carryout work in public.

ORANGE VESTS
The offenders wear high visibility orange vests with the words Community Payback’ on the back so people can see they are paying back’ for their crimes.

The London Probation service is co-ordinating the scheme with Tower Hamlets which includes litter picking and cleaning up graffiti around Roman Road, Bethnal Green Road and Poplar’s East India Dock Road.
It is one of eight such projects being carried out in the East End. Others include redecorating churches, gardening at two city farms and clearing overgrown areas.
Residents nominate a suitable project, where offenders can carry out work which can be nominated by email here
