Lorry crash closes Blackwall Tunnel

RESCUERS used heavy cutting equipment to free a trapped lorry driver in a pile-up in the Blackwall Tunnel. Three lorries were involved in the crash at the height of Monday's evening rush-hour in the southbound tunnel of the A102.

Three lorries were involved in the crash at the height of Monday's evening rush-hour in the southbound tunnel of the A102.

The injured man was taken by ambulance to hospital. The tunnel was closed for nearly two hours during the rescue operation involving ambulance and fire crews and police, causing gridlock traffic congestion in East London stretching three miles as far as Tower Bridge.
