Jones hails Danny Hylton and insists Hatters forward is best attacker in League Two after his display at Brisbane Road

Luton Town boss Nathan Jones was happy to pick up all three points at Leyton Orient despite having to come through a nervy finale.

The Hatters looked on course for a comfortable victory when Danny Hylton scored to make it 2-0 in the 74th minute after Cameron McGeehan’s opener.

Ollie Palmer reduced the arrears with 11 minutes remaining at Brisbane Road and it finished 2-1, but Luton could have made it 3-0 just before O’s goal when Alex Gilliead was played in and blazed over.

“It was frustrating we didn’t get more goals at 2-0 because then it makes it a more difficult game,” said Jones.

“Right before their goal we had an opportunity to make it 3-0 through our counter-attacking style. We’re an excellent counter-attacking side so when teams come out against us we can hurt them.

“We did that and it would have been nice to put it to bed at 3-0 instead of a 2-1 where they showed a little bit of fight, but three points are three points.

“If somebody woke me up on the morning of the game and said we can have a fight for the last few minutes and win 2-1 I would have taken it.”

Jones then went on to insists former Oxford United hitman Hylton is the best striker in League Two right now.

The experienced Luton forward was excellent at Brisbane Road along with talented partner Jack Marriott.

While Jay Simpson, after scoring 25 goals in the division last year, struggled to make his impact felt.

“Danny does what he does and he’s my main man and I love him because he gets me goals,” said Jones.

“He leads the line and is tireless and a nuisance and is the best in the league. I hear people talk about others as the best in the league, but he’s the best.

“When he comes away you know you are going to get a proper performance from him because he doesn’t really care about crowds, the managers or anything.”

Saturday’s attendance was Orient’s second biggest of the season at Brisbane Road with 5,471 watching.

Luton brought 1,341 – 18 more than Portsmouth last weekend – and the travelling fans were praised by Jones.

He added: “It might not be a long way but that traffic. You are probably better off going somewhere like Grimsby than coming to east London because the traffic is a joke!

“The fans are outstanding and they are brilliant. At the end they give you energy and make me proud to be manager of this club because we’re a fantastic club.

“They are the blood that runs through the veins of our club and they’re brilliant – absolutely outstanding. I think our owner was in there as well so he would have been delighted as well, but that’s the type of club we’ve got.”
