National League: Maidenhead United 0 Leyton Orient 1

Macauley Bonne scored after six minutes to give Leyton Orient a 1-0 win away to Maidenhead United in the National League this afternoon.

Steve Davis’ team came under pressure towards the end of the match at York Road, but managed to survive and claim a fourth victory of the season.

It puts O’s third in the table after seven games of the campaign and adds to the good vibe already at Brisbane Road heading into September.

Davis made two changes to the side which claimed a 1-1 draw at home to Eastleigh on Saturday.

Jobi McAnuff and David Mooney dropped to the bench and were replaced by Rommy Boco and Josh Koroma.

George Elokobi wore the armband for O’s and it didn’t take long for the travelling fans to celebrate a goal.

James Dayton did well on the right and crossed in for Bonne to head home the opener after six minutes.

Orient managed to dictate possession after making the breakthrough, but Maidenhead did show their threat in the 19th minute.

A Harry Pritchard cross nearly caught out Charlie Grainger in the away goal, but it sailed over the crossbar.

Boco’s influence was starting to grow as the game wore on and the winger whistled a shot off target just past the half an hour mark.

The dangerous Dave Tarpey got a first sight of goal three minutes later, but his 30-yard free kick was saved by Grainger.

Sean Marks went even closer six minutes later, as he robbed the ball off Elokobi and saw a near post effort pushed away by Orient’s goalkeeper.

Three minutes of stoppage time were added on at the end of the first half, but it went by without note, as O’s came in ahead at the break.

Orient started the second period strongly and Koroma tested Carl Pentney in the 48th minute after a good team move.

Maidenhead’s James Comley tried his luck moments later, yet his strike flew over the crossbar, as both sides continued to create chances.

In the 54th minute Orient should have doubled their advantage when Boco combined with Koroma, but the youngster curled wide.

The Magpies started to get on top, as the game passed the hour mark and Grainger made a fine save to deny Marks following a Pritchard cross.

Davis responded by bringing on Mooney and McAnuff with 64 on the clock at York Road with Dayton and Koroma making way.

Tarpey was involved again soon after and tried to create an opening for a chance, but couldn’t get a clean connect and the opportunity went begging.

Orient made their final substitution with quarter of an hour remaining, as Henry Ochieng came on for Boco to make his first appearance of the season.

As the seconds ticked away at York Road, Maidenhead began to up the ante and Elokobi needed to head away three dangerous crosses in quick succession.

Magpies produced a stunning counter attack eight minutes from time and a Marks cross was cleared by Joe Widdowson.

The pressure continued from Alan Devonshire’s team and Sam Barratt headed wide from a good position with two minutes left.

Barratt was involved again seconds later, as he tried to catch Grainger off his line, but the effort sailed over.

With Magpies committing men forward, Orient managed to find gaps on the break and Mooney tested Pentney in the first minute of five minutes of stoppage time.

It was nearly 2-0 soon after when Clay played Bonne in and his low effort across the face of goal just evaded Mooney.

Excellent defending by Josh Coulson prevented Tarpey from grabbing a late equaliser for Maidenhead before the full time whistle finally occurred.

After a battling defensive display, Orient held on and can now reflect on a good Bank Holiday weekend after picking up four points out of a possible six.
