A man has appeared in court after a police officer was injured during an operation to uncover a suspected cannabis ‘factory’ in a tower block in London’s East End.

The officer was taken by ambulance to hospital with head injuries after the raid at the 12-storey Dorrington Point in Bromley-by-Bow on Saturday, but has since been discharged.

Andy Philip, 42, who lives in the block in Bromley High Street, off Bow Road, appeared before Thames Magistrates yesterday on charges of causing actual bodily harm and producing cannabis, a controlled drug. He was bailed to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on December 1.

Dorrington Point, on Tower Hamlets’ Bow Bridge housing estate, was the scene of an explosion three years ago when a store of oil caught fire. Three people were rescued and hundreds more evacuated after the blast shattered windows and doors, causing a power cut to the building.
