A PEDESTRIAN who was taken to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries after he was hit by a car in Bethnal Green Road yesterday (Tuesday) morning is now in a stable condition.

Police and the ambulance service were called to the junction with Buckfast Street, near Vallance Road around 6.30am.

The 50-year-old man's clothes had to be cut off by paramedics and were left in the road along with his shoes as he was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Police closed Bethnal Green Road westbound from Vallance Road to Barnet Grove for the whole morning and into the afternoon as traffic was diverted around the scene of the accident.

A police spokesman said the man was in a serious condition and was under sedation on Tuesday evening but had improved overnight and, as the Advertiser went to press, his condition was stable and he was no longer under sedation.

A police investigation into the accident is currently ongoing.
