The 41-year-old man needed 22 stitches after he was punched twice in the eye at about 1.30am on New Year’s Day on board an eastbound train between Mile End and Barking.

His optic nerve was fractured during the attack, which also left him with two cuts, one above and one below his left eye.

The victim boarded the train at Mile End and sat opposite another man, who was already on the service.

They were talking to each other but things got heated and the second man stood up and punched the victim.

Detective Constable Paul Miller said: “I am very keen on members of the public to help us identify the man in the CCTV images as he may hold vital information which could help us in our investigations.”
