Police Community Support Officer Ahmmedur Choudhury spotted a man wearing a distinctive deer stalker hat hiding a bag under a hedge on the corner of Roman Road and Victoria Park Square before he went into Bethnal Green Police Station around 1.30pm on Saturday.
Along with a colleague, PCSO Choudhury seized the bag while the man was at the police station's front desk and fond that it contained a Tom Tom sat nav that police believe was stolen from a Tesco delivery van only 15 minutes earlier.
When the man returned and began looking for the bag he was arrested on suspicion of theft.
A man was charged with theft from a motor vehicle on Saturday following an incident in Bethnal Green.
He appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court on Monday and has been remanded in custody until April 27.
