A man, woman and child escaped a fire at a terraced house in Poplar yesterday morning.

Four fire engines carrying 21 firefighters raced to the property in Benledi Road after receiving the first of 10 calls to the flames just before 9am.

Crews from Poplar, Plaistow, Millwall and Stratford fire stations had the blaze under control by 10.12am, yet flames had already gutted the second floor and damaged part of the roof.

The trio left the building before London Fire Brigade arrived with the man taken to hospital by paramedics.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
