MATILDA the elephant is coming to a museum in Docklands.
The life size model is one of 260 baby elephants on display in London to highlight the plight of the Asian elephant as part of an event organised by the charity Elephant Family. Matilda has been decorated in close to 2,000 images, many of the from the Museum of London' s collection, by the photographic artists Craig Ritchie and Maribel Castro.
The model will be on display at the Museum of London Docklands until June 30 and will then be auctioned at Sotheby's in the hope of raising �2 million to support the protection of Asia's elephants and to benefit 20 UK conservation charities.
Visitor Services Team Leader, Gerald Veeren who looks after visitors at the museum in West India Quay said: "The Museum of London Docklands is a surprisingly relevant venue to house Matilda during her stay in London as we have photographic evidence in our galleries of elephants arriving in London's docks as part of travelling circuses in the 1960s and the terrible trade in ivory which passed through London's docks and warehouses up to the early twentieth century.
