Lutfur Rahman’s bid for re-election gained a boost this week with the East End’s largest community organisation offering him praise.

The East London Communities Organisation (TELCO) has penned a letter calling Mayor Rahman, who is seeking re-election on May 22, “fair, accountable and accessible”.

Its signatories include Rev Adam Atkinson of St Peter’s Church in Bethnal Green, Father Tom O’Brien of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Bethnal Green, Captain Nick Coke of the Salvation Army, Dilowar Khan of the East London Mosque and Nurul Ullah of the Darul Ummah Centre.

The letter said: “Mr Rahman agreed to all of our proposals and, once elected, has been absolutely true to his word.

“This applies especially to leading on building Living Wage into the Borough’s procurement strategy, supporting the St Clements Community Land Trust and our CitySafe campaign, attending our 15thAnniversary Assembly in 2011 and the Olympic Iftar we organised in July 2012 and, most importantly, making himself, his cabinet and his senior officers available to meet with us on a regular basis.”

The letter ends by saying: “We have found Mayor Rahman to be fair, accessible and accountable.”

The signatories also defended Mayor Rahman, against criticism of his time in office in the media.

It said: “We would much prefer this negative publicity not to have happened, we would like to put the record straight on our shared experience of working with Mayor Rahman and his administration since his election in 2010.”

TELCO is the founding chapter of London Citizens, the UK’s largest independent community alliance.

Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “I’m very grateful that TELCO have issued this unprecedented letter in support of my approach and record.

“If I’m re-elected I promise to keep working with TELCO and other community groups to bring transformational change to the East End.”
