Developing the social media presence of a bank’s project for young people has led to one Tower Hamlets apprentice being named the apprentice of the year.
Shaal Karim was one of four young people to win an outstanding achievement award in the category at the first Mayor’s Fund for London awards.
He was nominated for his work with Standard Charter Bank’s Working for Youth initiative, which works with corporate partners to increase the recruitment of young people.
He said: “Through coaching from my team mates, Standard Chartered training workshops, and being given responsibility I feel that my skills have vastly improved.
“This is evident when I am giving presentations or mentoring young people and I feel a lot more confident in the working environment.”
Brought into the team due to his background in digital media, Shaal has played a key role in developing a social media strategy.
His insights helped to increase the number of Facebook followers and interactions, while he also created user guides for others.
He has also started mentoring young people, sharing his journey with them and visiting primary schools once a week to help children improve their reading skills.
