Mercy Brown lifts Canary Wharf’s ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ title

Weightlift champ Mercy Brown lifted another title last night when she was chosen Canary Wharf Sports Personality of the Year.
She beat fierce competition at the East Wintergarden ceremony.
Mercy represented England in last summer’s Commonwealth Games, won a bronze at the European Youth Championships and is placed 19th at the Senior World Championships against older and more experienced competitors.
She holds 30 national records and is now aiming for the 2016 Rio Olympics, after breaking three British records at November’s IWC Senior World Championships.
Canary Wharf Group’s Zakir Khan said: “We’ve known Mercy for several years, charting her development into a professional athlete with promising prospects for the Rio Olympics.”

Three east London sports groups also received awards last night for achievements in 2014, Team Phoenix ice skaters, London Disability swimming club and the Bangladesh Football Association.
Team Phoenix ranked third in Britain in 2014, their season kicking off in September with a runaway first at Lee the Valley London Region Open, followed by a Gold in November in the Wales & West Synchronised competition.

Some 300 sports personalities and administrators packed the 14th annual Canary Wharf awards last night, including Tower Hamlets councillors, Dagenham & Redbridge FC boss Stephen Thompson and former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Dean Saunders. The awards are part of an east London community programme for social and economic development.
