Free wholesome meals were given free in London’s East End to people recovering from homelessness or illness, those on a low income or socially isolated and to refugees.
The event was paid for the previous night at Spitalfields’ Happy Café with a fundraiser £30 three-course meal for wellwishers arranged by Mike’s Table, an organisation finding food that’s surplus and would otherwise go to waste.
Mike’s Table chefs use produce to create off-the-cuff shared around the table menus.
The organisation was set up by Louise Holstein in memory of her husband, Mike Redmayne. One of their passions was eating good food in top venues, but they recognised this was a privilege that was not open to everyone.
Mike’s Table, in a small way, hopes to redress that balance by their pledge to.
They staged both “share and share alike” evenings at the Canvas Café in Hanbury Street, a not-for-profit creative space that hosts wellbeing and happiness events, launching as London’s first Happy Café in 2015 in partnership with the charity Action for Happiness.
