Mile End’s Post Office might be closed down to be replaced with a new branch 75 metres up the road.

The Post Office is asking customers what they think of plans to shut the branch at 1b Burdett Road to reopen another location at 11 Burdett Road in a unit of Bleadon House.

The same postmaster will run the branch, which will be open for an additional 19 hours a week, under a scheme to convert 6,000 branches – about half of the Post Office network –to modern “open plan” offices, in a bid to stave off closures.

Post Office regional network manager for south and east England, Mark Lawrence, said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Mile End and we are confident that the new branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.”

The public consultation will close on May 7. To have your say, visit comments@postoffice.co.uk.
