The driver had picked up a woman passenger in Whitechapel and drove to Beckton, when his minicab was surrounded by three men in the night-time incident on October 17. One of the men got inside and attacked him.
The minicab was driven off with the passenger inside, who was released unhurt.
The attack was in Tollgate Road in Beckton, at the junction with Stansfeld Road, just after 1am.
Police this week urged witnesses or anyone with information to call 020-8275 5769, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800-555111.
