A MINUTE’S silence was observed today at the beginning of the inquest into the 7/7 bombings which killed 52 people in London in 2005.
The coroner Lady Justice Hallett also asked for the names of all 52 to be read out, including the seven people who died at Aldgate underground station, at today’s hearing. The packed courtroom also obseved a minute’s silence in honour of the people killed in the terrorist attacks.
The inquest which opened at the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand is expected to run until at least March next year and families and friends hope that it will answer some of their questions into what happened and whether M15 could have stopped the four suicide bombers.
A further 700 people were injured in the explosions at Aldgate, Russell Square, Edgware Road and on a bus at Tavistock Place.
Casualties from the explosion at Aldgate were brought to the nearby Royal London Hospital where ten operating theatres were running concurrently as staff worked round the clock to help the injured.
