Continuing fears over the safety of cyclists and pedestrians at notorious black spot Bow roundabout should be tackled urgently, it has been urged.

London Assembly Member for City and East John Biggs welcomed the ongoing work in the south west corner of the busy junction, between Bow and Stratford, which is designed to further improve cyclists’ safety.

The works are part of a series of measures implemented since the death of two cyclists in just three weeks in 2011.

But the Tower Hamlets mayoral candidate for Labour urged Transport for London (TfL) to continue improving safety at the junction, with greater emphasis on pedestrians.

“I welcome the long overdue safety measures which are now underway for cyclists travelling from west to east,” he said.

“However, I am still very concerned about safety - particularly of pedestrians - at Bow roundabout.

“TfL say motorists will be faced with mile long queues should pedestrian crossings be installed. Whilst we don’t want life to be harder for drivers, pedestrian safety is extremely important and something must be done to tackle this urgent issue.”
