‘Most wanted’ burglary suspects hunted by police for Christmas

Police have stepped up their hunt for 12 “most wanted” suspect burglars in the week up to Christmas with teams from the Met’s Territorial Support Group out to track them down.

The Met teams, which specialise in intelligence-led operations, have already successfully had 24 burglars convicted since September.
Now Scotland Yard has published a list of another 12 “most wanted suspects” it says are evading them—11 men and one woman—who detectives want to collar for questioning about a run of break-ins across London.
“We’ll use every means to catch those on the ‘wanted’ list so they can face justice,” Scotland Yard’s Commander Simon Letchford said. “We are stepping up our activity before Christmas to locate and arrest outstanding suspects and want to hear from anyone with information that could help us.”
Operation Bumblebee was launched in September to tackle the traditional rise in burglary of homes during autumn and winter, with a quarter more break-ins usually reported.

Detectives have arrested 1,400 suspects for questioning since September 21, latest figures show, as part of investigations into break-ins.

“Hand yourself in if your face is on this list,” Cmndr Letchford urged them. “Don’t ruin Christmas for your family.”
Several tactics are being used to crack down on burglaries, using science and technology. These include high visibility patrols in burglary hot spots using predictive crime mapping.

Forensic property-marking SmartWater kits are also being distributed to households to mark possessions invisibly with a unique code that can be identified by police or second-hand dealers. Neighbourhood officers have delivered 95,000 SmartWater kits to homes across London so far, with another 440,000 kits going out in the next three years.
The Met is also targeting London’s flea markets where stolen goods are often “fenced” by thieves, with a voluntary code of conduct for traders to record sellers’ details, check property with the national Mobile Phone crime unit and inform police when stolen property comes into their possession.
Burglaries have fallen by almost 10 per cent in London this year compared to 2014, Scotland has confirmed, with 7,767 fewer offences reported.
