The deck of London’s newest moveable bridge was installed last week in Canary Wharf following a 36-hour voyage across the North Sea.

The 28-metre structure on Water Street crosses the southern end of Bellmouth Passage.

Once open for use, it will provide a road and pedestrian link between Montgomery Square and Canary Wharf’s new district, Wood Wharf.

Two hydraulic cylinders underneath the eastern end of the bridge will raise the deck to allow large ships to pass; revealing its steel structure and mechanical parts.

“It’s been a fascinating project to work on,” said engineer Vlad Opanasiuk of COWI, who designed the bridge alongside Knight Architects and Eadon Consulting.

“Solving complex engineering challenges to bring brilliant designs like this to reality is what makes being an engineer so rewarding.”

The bridge was shipped from Belgium ahead of its installation on Tuesday, August 14.
