MUMS thinking of returning to work in September when the new term begins are being canvassed at the school gates.

Women have been approaching them in the East End urging them to start looking now for that part-time job.

They are members of Women Like Us, an organisation supporting mothers on their journey back to the world of work.

It gives free career coaching and offers resources to help find part-time work in their own neighbourhoods with hours to suit their family needs.

“The mothers need to start looking before the summer holidays,” warned Karen Mattison, the organisation’s director.

“We advise any mother who wants to start a new job in the autumn to think about getting back to work now.”

Free career coaching’ workshops are being run as part of the organisation’s City Fringe programme which includes areas like Tower Hamlets and neighbouring Hackney.

The workshops cover subjects including networking’ and interview skills, CV writing and one-to-one career coaching.

Women Like Us’ started in 2004 when Karen and friend Emma Stewart realised as employers themselves that some of the best candidates for jobs were among their own network’ of other mothers at the school gates.

“We came up with the idea when we were looking for skilled staff and found them among our friends at the gates,” Karen explained.

“There are talented women at school gates who would like part-time work, while there are employers looking for people with their skills for part-time work. We just play matchmaker.”

So the two set up Women Like Us’ to provide coaching, CV planning and interview skills to help mums regain their confidence after several years out of the workplace while brining up their children.
