Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a man in Bethnal Green last night.

Staff from the London Ambulance service called the police to reports of a shooting inside a block of flats in Florida Street, at 20.05pm.

A man suffering from gunshot injuries, believed to be aged 20, was found at the scene by firearms and local officers but died shortly afterwards at 20.45pm.

A spokesman from the Met police said: “At this early stage it is believe the victim was shot as he answered to door at an address in Florida Street by an unknown person, or persons.”

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command believe they know the identity of the victim, although formal identification is still to take place.

DCI Chris Jones, who is leading the investigation, said “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area around 8.00pm on Monday evening and saw anything suspicious in the vicinity of Florida Street to come forward and speak to police.

“At this early stage we are still working to establish the reasons why this young man was killed - if you have any information that could help, please contact us.”

A post-mortem examination will be held at 10.30am on Thursday, October 6, at Poplar mortuary.

Two men, aged 21 and 29, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and are currently in custody at an east London police station.

Any witnesses or anyone with information has been asked to contact police on 101.
