COPS are still trying to trace a mystery man who plunged into icy waters in a desperate attempt rescue a drowning man

Officers believe the man, who they now think was blonde, rather than bald, and was possibly Polish, may hold the key to Ibrahim Gharib's death.

The man dived into the water at Shadwell Basin in a bid to save the 20-year-old after he fell in under suspicious circumstances on the evening of Thursday, March 18.

The man left the scene of tragedy when the emergency services arrived.

Detectives believe Ibrahim was involved in a fight with others before he plunged into the water.

The man who tried to save him, described as stocky and in his 30s, is not a suspect and officers believe he holds vital information.

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of murder, aged 20 and 22, and have been released on police bail.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to call 020 8345 3734 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
