EAGER bargain-hunters have the same rights when they buy cut price goods in the January sales as they do for full-price items, shoppers are being advised.

The tip comes from trading standards officers in London’s East End as the New Year sales get under way.

Shoppers are entitled to expect their purchase to be satisfactory’ and fit for purpose as described, under the Consumer Act, Tower Hamlets trading standards office says this week.

Customers should be entitled to their money back if faulty or unsatisfactory goods are returned within a reasonable time, it points out.

“People often think that if you buy goods in the sales you forgo your consumer rights,” says a Town Hall statement.

“But they have exactly the same rights to refunds, repairs and replacements that they would on full-price items. A product reduced because it is faulty should be pointed out in advance.”

Online shoppers have additional rights on the internet, including a seven-day cooling off’ period when an order can be cancelled, the authority adds. A full refund can also be demanded if goods are not provided by an agreed date.

The Tower Hamlets trading standards office can be contacted by phone on: 020-7364 5008.
