Mahatma Gandhi and Sylvia Pankhurst are among the famous figures commemorated by historical plaques across the East End, a new book reveals.
Track the Plaque explores the famous blue plaques around the capital, which are installed by historical societies such as English Heritage to mark the places that famous figures lived, worked or visited.
Derek Sumeray’s book charts 32 walks around the plaques in London, including a plaque commemorating Indian leader and pacifist Gandhi, who stayed in Grace Street, Bromley in 1931, and a memorial to author HG Wells who opened a school just around the corner in 1924.
Also among the 54 plaques in the East End is a marker on the site of a Bow toy factory owned by women’s rights fighter Sylvia Pankhurst.
