The newest sixthform college in the East End managed 100 per cent pass rate in its second year of exams when today’s A-Level results came out.

All 285 students in Year 13 sitting A-Levels at Cambridge Heath Sixthform College, which opened three years ago in Bethnal Green, got through to pass rates.

More than a-quarter got top grades, A*, A and B, compared to 20 per cent last year, with many now lined up to go on to university.

The 100 per cent success beat the college’s first results a year ago when 97 per cent passed.

In addition were those taking BTec exams at the same grade, totalling 363 at Level 3.

But the college was quick to defend its success against criticism that A-Levels are getting too easy.

“It’s unfair for the Government to give out the message that the exam threashhold needs to be harder,” college director Rebecca Coker-Adeleke told the Advertiser. “All our students have worked their socks off over the past two years.

“The exams were not too easy. The way the Government message is framed doesn’t support out students.

“It’s really unfair to knock them at a time we should be celebrating their achievement.

“The exam boards may be the issue, not the standards the students are achieving.”

The college doubled the number of students getting A* and As from last year. But there’s still pressure to do better.

“I’m not satisfied with just 30 per cent,” Ms Coker-Adeleke added. “We want more students into the top grades next year.

“But we’re still having to build up our reputation because we’re a completely new establishment.”

The Wessex campus was busy this-afternoon helping many of the 363 Level 3 students with their university applications. Many got the result they needed for their first choice, although the college admitted there was “still some ringing round to do” to get all their students placed.

Another 100 students in Year 12 also turned up today to get their AS results. They go on to their full A Level courses when the new term begins next month.

Cambridge Heath College was set up in 2009 as the sixthform arm of three Tower Hamlets secondaries, Morpeth and Oaklands in Bethnal Green and Swanley in Whitechapel. But the college feels it needs to build up its reputation which will take time.
