THE unique wave shaped’ roof of the 2012 Olympics aquatics centre has reached its distinctive half-way point, now appearing on East London’s skyline.
The 2,800-tonne steel structure, 500ft end to end, is one of the most complex engineering and construction challenges of the whole Olympics project. It’s on track to be ready by the summer.
Schoolboy Usof Khan, from Bethnal Green’s Oaklands Secondary, was lucky enough to spend a week of work experience at the Stratford site.
“I learned a lot about the construction of the Aquatics centre,” said the 15-year-old. “It’s going to be a great building with its unique shape.”
He wants to be an architect when he leaves school—so the work experience on site was a good grounding in the construction industry.
