FIREFIGHTERS tackling a blaze during the night in a council flat in London’s East End discovered the place was an illegal drugs den.

Police were informed after the fire brigade broke into the empty flat on the first floor at Bethnal Green’s Ansen House in Shandy Street at 12.40am.

“We realised the flat had been used as a drugs den as soon as we got inside,” said a senior fire officer at the scene.

“There was equipment which had obviously been used for measuring drugs and other paraphernalia lying around in the flat.”

People living in the flat above were woken by the smoke and dialled 999. Cause of the blaze was being looked into today. No serious damage was caused.
