French defender calls for patience after frustrating defeat last weekend

Leyton Orient captain Mathieu Baudry believes there is no need to panic after Saturday’s defeat to Accrington Stanley, but has called on fans to get behind the current team and not boo them.

The Frenchman played the full 90 minutes last weekend as the O’s suffered their second defeat of the season at Brisbane Road following a first-half Josh Windass goal.

It saw Ian Hendon’s side leave the pitch at the break to boos and they only got louder at the full time whistle after the 1-0 loss.

Fans showed their frustration numerous times in the second period with Orient struggling to get back into the game and various complaints were aimed at Hendon towards the conclusion of the match.

But Baudry says fans need to be patient and appreciate the position Orient are in. They sit seventh in the League Two table with 16 matches played, despite their mixed run of results of late.

He said: “We haven’t got massive experience in the team so it is a bit frustrating when your own fans are not with you, but the main part of the ground is with us and we can feel that.

“People who understand the game understand that this squad is an honest one, but we are getting some supporters who are becoming frustrated.

“We understand that is because of last season and they want to get back to League One as soon as possible because that is football.

“I know we have gone down, but we have a tough match every week in this division so we need to be humble and treat the league with respect. We’re in the play-off positions and need to respect that.”

Orient are in the top seven, but arguably would be higher up had they defended better of late.

Their problem has been conceding sloppy goals and switching off, which is exactly what happened on Saturday against Stanley.

Billy Kee picked the ball up in front of the back four and the O’s defence stood still as Windass ran through, beat the offside trap and slotted past Alex Cisak.

Baudry and Connor Essam allowed the Stanley man to get in behind them too easily and Adam Chicksen, plus Essam, were both playing him onside.

It was a poor goal to concede and one that was easily avoidable had the defence not switched off.

Although O’s created chances before that and after Windass’ effort, Stanley deserved to get the three points for delivering a solid display at the back and always looking in control.

Baudry added: “We had chances and then, after we concede, I don’t know if it is a lack of experience or because it wasn’t the scoreline we wanted, but I felt like we lost our way a little bit after the goal.

“We started panicking a little bit. It was everyone and we just need to relax because we are only two points off the automatic places. I am not happy that we have lost to Accrington, but I think everybody worked hard.

“We can’t panic because there is a long way to go. When you panic you do things wrong and there is a saying that goes don’t be afraid to lose if you want to win because as soon as you panic you don’t pick the right choices.

“When that happens it shows because you get on the back foot, but we need to stay positive and carry on playing. I’m sure we will get through this period, but it is not a catastrophe at the moment.”

Panic isn’t required yet, but Saturday wasn’t good enough and a strong response is needed.
