Orient boss reveals he has no plans to bring in a new assistant manager at the moment

Leyton Orient player-manager Kevin Nolan has admitted he is unlikely to appoint another person to his backroom staff at the moment and has instead given Andy Edwards a bigger role with the first team.

Edwards is the Academy Director at Brisbane Road and has overseen a huge amount of success whilst in charge of the youth at E10.

Many fans have called for him to be given a more significant role and the former West Ham United captain has done that.

He revealed following Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Northampton Town, that the former Peterborough United defender is helping out with the first team.

“Adding somebody to my backroom staff is not something I have thought about, I have not really spoken to anyone,” said Nolan.

“I’m really happy what with what I have got at the moment. They have said do I want to bring someone in, but I have too much on my plate at the minute and I need to make sure I get that right.

“I have got lads who I trust and I’m delighted to have behind me. I have given Andy Edwards a bit more of a role with us recently to ease the pressure on me if I am playing.”

The Orient boss went on to explain how Edwards was involved with the substitutions made during the weekend game with Northampton in League Two.

Nolan revealed Andy Hessenthaler and goalkeeper coach Lee Harrison were in charge of the replacements alongside the O’s Academy Director.

He added: “Andy and Harrison make the decisions, I trust them. I said that a couple of weeks ago.

“They can see it and we have Andy Edwards, who has been sitting up in the stands, we take advice from him too.

“They made the changes, they just wanted to let me know what was going to happen so I could tell the people on the field what we were doing.”

It was widely reported that former Hammers first team coach Wally Downes would join Nolan at Orient, but it appears the player-manager is happy with the current set-up at Brisbane Road.
