Nursery and 22-storey tower block set for Poplar site

A new nursery and 22-storey residential tower block is set to be built as part of the Chrisp Street regeneration.
The brownfield site next to Langdon Park DLR station will create 206 new homes and 129m squared of nursery space on Carmen Street, Poplar.
Developer Ballymore, who is also responsible for Old Spitalfields Market, was granted planning permission by Tower Hamlets Council for the mixed-use plan which also includes a semi-basement car park with cycle racks.
The project will appear as a freestanding tower as a landmark for the train station and a lower block that connects Carmen Street and Cording Street.
The new homes will be offered to rent under a range of tenures. Designers Stock Woolstencraft promise 31.5 per cent of the flats will be available at “affordable” rents, and a “significant proportion” will be provided for social rent.
But they did say that 52 per cent of the social rented flats will have three or more bedrooms with individual maisonettes for larger families.
The completed development will also provide a number of pathways to provide more accessible routes through the site to the DLR station and the homes will come with balconies, terraces, and garden spaces.
