Brisbane Road head coach reflects on final day in Spain and encouraging signs from his forward options

Leyton Orient head coach Ian Hendon was pleased to end their training camp in Spain with a 5-0 thrashing over Los Iberos, a team of trialist based in Madrid.

Ollie Palmer scored three times – his first goals for the club – while Paul McCallum and Dean Cox were on target for the O’s.

Hendon revealed the fixture was only arranged at the last minute, but it was a good opportunity to give players more minutes.

“It was pleasing to finish the trip like that. It was a bit of a last minute decision to play the game,” he said.

“This team came into hotel on Saturday and we watched them train and they looked decent.

“We had a couple of players that needed more minutes so we decided to do it.”

Although it was against much weaker opposition compared to their previous two pre-season games out in Spain against Championship sides Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough, Hendon was happy to see Palmer score.

The 23-year-old moved to Brisbane Road for an undisclosed fee from Mansfield Town and Orient’s head coach was impressed with him and McCallum again.

Hendon added: “I am not playing it down, but they were a little easier to play against compared to what we have previously faced.

“But it doesn’t matter for strikers who they are scoring against. Ollie showed some nice touches and took his goals really well.

“Paul was unlucky not to score against Huddersfield the other day, I know what he type of player he is and that he can get goals so it hasn’t surprised me how well he has done.”

The trip to Spain also provided an opportunity for players to get to know each other better and strike up a better bond.

“At home they get in for training and they go, but here we have all been having meals together and spending time with each other and getting to know each other so that will definitely help us,” added Hendon.

Orient will now prepare for Saturday’s clash against former League One rivals Colchester United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.
