Leyton Orient forward Ollie Palmer is keen to help the club get back to winning ways in League Two by beating Hartlepool United at Victoria Park this weekend.

The O’s bounced back from their disappointing loss to Accrington Stanley last month by defeating Staines Town 6-1 on Saturday.

Ian Hendon watched his side score four times in the first half of their FA Cup first round tie to progress comfortably.

Palmer scored twice at Brisbane Road to inspire the rout with Dean Cox also hitting a brace and John Marquis and Sean Clohessy adding their first goals for O’s.

It has given everyone at the club a confidence boost ahead of the long trip to Hartlepool on Sunday for a 12.15pm kick-off.

And after scoring twice at the weekend, Palmer is keen to take that form into the league.

He said: “We have been a little bit sloppy and unfortunate at times in our last few league games, but we have just got to start punishing teams.

“We did that against Staines and we have to be a little bit more ruthless in League Two as well.

“It is important we win on Sunday and try to get back into the top three. We’re only two points off that, which shows how tight this league is. Despite our dip in form we are still close to the automatic promotion places and that demonstrates the quality we have in our squad.

“We just need to pick up a few more wins now and we’ll be flying again and back in the top three.”

Orient were victorious the last time they travelled and that was a long trip as well.

Jack Payne scored the only goal of the game at Morecambe on October 24 to give Hendon and his side an excellent away win.

More success this weekend is possible as well with Hartlepool struggling this year. The Pools are 19th in League Two and have been poor at Victoria Park in recent months.

Although they defeated Cheltenham 1-0 in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday, the last time they were triumphant on home soil in the league was on August 22 when Scott Fenwick scored the only goal of the game against Newport County.

Hartlepool were going well then and third in the table, but things have changed very quickly.

With the Sky Sports cameras at Victoria Park, it could inspire the home side to raise their level of performance, but Palmer insists Orient will be taking the game to the Monkey Hangers.

He added: “I don’t think playing in front of the TV cameras will play a part in our display. The boys have shown we can be professional against Staines and we will do the same this weekend.

“It was good to get a few goals for the team on Saturday and winning 6-1 is a good confidence booster for everyone. But we have got to go to Hartlepool now and really take the game to them on Sunday.”
