Olympic gold medallist Ed McKeever took to the River Lea to join a clean up operation earlier this month.

Fresh from paddling his way to gold in the 200m sprint kayak race at this summer’s games, Ed joined volunteers from The Big Waterways Clean Up project to help them clean up the Lea on its path through Tower Hamlets.

The project is backed by waterway charity Thames21, which receives funding from the National Lottery Fund.

Ed said: “The spirit shown by volunteers made the Games so special and it is important that it is preserved and developed.”

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of communities across the UK. I have spent a lot of years training on water so it’s wonderful to lend a helping hand to improve this river for everyone to enjoy.”
