Olympics and Queen’s Jubilee make a busy year for iconic Tower Bridge
The world’s most iconic bridge has had a busy year in 2012, what with the Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee.
A public exhibition opens at Tower Bridge on Friday on the high walkway 140ft above the Thames showing unique images capturing those special moments that put the treasured Victorian structure under the global spotlight.
They include football superstar David Beckham’s speedboat dash along the Thames carrying the Olympic torch to the Opening ceremony at Stratford on July 27, as it passed under the raised bascules.
Another is the raising of the bascules for the Queen to pass through on the royal barge during her Diamond Jubilee Thames Pageant in June.
The images were captured by East End professional photographer Clive Totman for the City of London Corporation’s archives.

Clive, who has been running a ‘City Images’ business from his Rivington House studio at Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch since 1992, has been allowed to put his “moments in time” snapshots on show until January 30.
The ‘Golden Legacy’ display is being added to the ‘Cities of the Modern Games’ exhibition now running, showing all the Olympic host cities from the past 116 years—almost as far back as the original opening of Tower Bridge in 1894.
