One man was rescued by firefighters and some 80 people evacuated their homes after a blaze broke out in a block of flats.

More than 35 crew members and six engines were called to the fire on a third floor flat at Hughes Mansions, Valence Road, Whitechapel at 12.45am on Sunday.

The man was taken to a local hospital suffering from smoke inhalation while 80 residents chose to leave their homes as crews tackled the flames.

About one-fifth of the flat was damaged by fire before the incident was brought under control at 1.40am.

Pumps from Whitechapel, Shadwell, Bethnal Green and Shoreditch attended.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
