Matt Harrold insists O’s will get back on track in October and calls for some perspective amid criticism of Steve Davis

Matt Harrold has insisted Leyton Orient will turn things around and backed boss Steve Davis to get the best out of a new-look squad at Brisbane Road.

The former Crewe Alexandra manager has come under some scrutiny of late after picking up just four points out of a possible 18 in the month of September.

Orient started it with a 4-1 win over Guiseley and also picked up an excellent point at Aldershot Town following a 2-2 draw.

But home defeats to Halifax Town, Hartlepool United and AFC Fylde, plus a loss at Boreham Wood, has seen some supporters air their frustrations.

Davis, with the help of Director of Football Martin Ling, has made 16 permanent or loan signings after taking over a depleted squad at Brisbane Road on July 10 and one of the new recruits feels it is rubbish to say he is under pressure.

Harrold said: “It’s a new group put together and it is kind of like a new club, but when I joined over a month ago (from Crawley Town) I’ve never known such a positive atmosphere.

“But I remember when Eddie Howe lost five games on the trot when he was in charge of AFC Bournemouth (in the 2012/13 campaign), but they still got promoted out of League One that season, so there needs to be a bit perspective.

“Another thing is we are not playing rubbish and getting battered. Things aren’t going our way, but it is fine lines.

“It is keeping the ball out of one net when someone gets a free header and I also look back at my chance against Halifax (3-0 loss).

“Looking back it was horrible to see because it is probably one of the best opportunities I’ve ever had in my career, so one of my worst misses, but if that goes in, it changes the whole concept of the game.

“Again we dominated the ball against Halifax, but this is the way things are going right now, yet to say the manager is under pressure is pretty premature and rubbish.”

Harrold continued: “To also blame the players is rubbish. It is just as a group, we need to change the fine lines which aren’t going our way. It is not luck, it is changing the fine lines and it takes a group to be strong together and to keep working hard to do that.

“From my experience, the only way things change is if you keep working hard day in, day out and then it will change and once we get that result the cloud is lifted.”
