I recently met with the new police officers the council is funding in the borough and discussed with them the steps being taken to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour across Tower Hamlets.

Making our streets safer is one of my priorities as mayor, and that is why I have announced a multi-million pound investment in community safety to help fund a total of 39 additional police officers.

The new police officers are tasked with tackling areas where crime and anti-social behaviour are issues.

They will also assist in cracking down on violent crime and drug dealing.

We have seen cuts to police numbers from central government.

It shouldn’t be left to local councils to pick up the slack when we are also seeing our own funding slashed. But we must do what we can.

Residents want the reassurance of seeing police officers on the beat.

That is why I will continue to make this a priority as mayor.
