Viewpoint: ‘The borough’s on the up, don’t put that at risk’

Mike Brooke

Three years ago, I became mayor in circumstances I never expected. The borough’s reputation was in tatters following the removal of the previous mayor.

Politicians may often blame ‘the last lot’ but the fact the government had to appoint commissioners showed just how deep the rot of corruption and financial mismanagement was.

Turning the council around so powers were restored will always be part of my story, but for me the privilege of being mayor is delivering real change for residents.

Extra money for police officers and to tackle anti-social behaviour. New genuinely affordable council housing and the most affordable homes built anywhere in the country last year. Launching Workpath and getting 2,600 into work. Cleaning up our streets and getting to grips with our air quality.

There is more to be done but in three years the borough is on the up, let’s not put that at risk.
