Brisbane Road boss reveals he will look to add to his squad, praises non-league side and reveals latest on Jack Payne

Leyton Orient head coach Ian Hendon felt his side’s 6-1 thrashing of Ryman Premier outfit Staines Town in the first round of the FA Cup was a fair result.

The O’s were three goals up after 13 minutes with Ollie Palmer scoring twice and Dean Cox also on target against the non-league opposition that were 81 places below the home side.

Darren Purse pulled one back for the Swans against his former club midway through the first half before Cox added another from a free kick.

After so many goals in the first period, the second was always likely to be quieter and the east Londoners needed to wait until late on to finish the tie off.

But John Marquis and Sean Clohessy scored their first goals for the Brisbane Road outfit to conclude a satisfactory afternoon for the League Two team.

Hendon said: “No I don’t think the final score was harsh on Staines, not at all. I actually went into the changing room and felt we should have scored more.

“We had some good chances second half to really finish the game off. No disrespect to Staines, they have come here and had a go.

“They have a couple of lads that I know like Ahmed Abdulla. I had him at West Ham and he is a very good footballer and he showed that in spells during the game.

“Credit to Nicky Forster and his team because they came and had a go, but we just had a bit too much.”

Orient lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Blair Turgott and Cox out on the wings, but Hendon refused to give any clues as to whether he will stick with that for next weekend’s match at Hartlepool United.

The O’s face the Monkey Hangers on Sunday afternoon – live on Sky Sports, but refused to be drawn on what side he would pick.

He did reveal that Jack Payne, substituted in the 63rd minute after receiving a blow, was only taken off as a precaution.

“To be honest I think Jack’s just got a knock and him coming off was more precaution than anything else. We will assess him and see how he is on Monday,” added Hendon.

“We had a look at Staines and we put a team out that we thought would perform and cause them problems – which was the case today.

“Now we will look at Hartlepool and do the same and decide how we play there. There is a purpose to everything we do.”

Hendon did admit he was slightly disappointed with the goal the O’s conceded against the Swans with goalkeeper Alex Cisak failing to claim a cross.

But he was happy overall and revealed that Orient will look to bring some more people in on loan over the next week before playing Hartlepool.

“I was disappointed with the goal, it has come in from a corner and Alex had held his hands up and said he should have done better with the first cross. It was a nice touch by Darren to be fair, a little lob over him,” said Hendon.

“I had a meeting with the president Francesco Becchetti this week and we have discussed the squad. Yes we are looking to add to it, we are not obviously going to say where position wise because it wouldn’t be fair on anybody, but we are looking to bring a couple in if we can.”
