A post mortem opens this morning into the death of a young woman killed a Boris Bike at a notoriously-busy junction in east London.

The parents of the 20-year-old arrived in London from France last night to formally identify her at Poplar Mortuary.

The woman died despite paramedics from the Royal London Hospital battling to save her at the scene of the accident at the A11 Whitechapel High Street junction with Commercial Street and the A13 Commercial Road.

She was on her way to her home in Bow, just two miles away, on a Barclays Hire bike during Friday evening’s rush-hour along the controversial H2 cycle highway which is now being criticised as unsafe.

The London Assembly’s John Biggs who visited the accident scene yesterday has called for the cycle route to be redesigned.

“I would not let a child of mine cycle here,” he said.

“The cycle highway painted blue creates a sense of safety, which evidence suggests is not the case.

“A bit of blue paint doesn’t make you safe—there are hazards at a busy junction like this.

“I doubt Whitechapel is suitable for a cycle-way. It’s too congested and too narrow—there’s not enough space to separate cyclists from the traffic.”

He has been campaigning to make the A11 safer for cyclinsts including the notorious Bow Roundabout where a cyclist was killed last year.

“We need to find out if the bike design is right,” he added. “Boris bikes are heavy and cumbersome and are not manoeuvrable.”

He was in talks with TfL only last week about his concerns over safety on the A11 cycle route which is being extended past the Bow Roundabout to Stratford later this year.

The London Cycle Campaign is calling for traffic light sequences to be changed at Gardiner’s Corner where the woman was killed to give priority to cyclists in future.
