A MAJOR petrol station in the East End is being bulldozed and will not be rebuilt for five years while Crossrail takes over nearby land.

Sainsbury's in Whitechapel's have this week begun demolishing its tank station on Cambridge Heath Road to built a temporary car park for its store.

Its current car park has to make way for the construction of Crossrail, the major railway project connecting East and West London, a Sainbury's spokesman explained. Once the land is handed back to Sainsbury after five years the petrol station and old car park will be rebuilt.

Crossrail needs the land of the current car park by May 4. The demolition of the tank station is expected to take another week but the new car park is not expected to be ready till this summer.
